Jersey City, NJ – July 15, 2024 – Bentboiz Press, a new queer publishing company dedicated to amplifying LGBTQ+ voices, proudly announces the release of its debut publication, So Far Away No One Will Notice by Arthur Bruso. This profound memoir delves into the gay experience across two distinct eras, offering readers an intimate look into the resilience and complexity of queer lives.
Arthur Bruso, a gay man, visual artist, curator, and arts writer, juxtaposes his personal journey with the historical and emotional struggles depicted in the streaming series Fellow Travelers. Diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer, Bruso's battle and subsequent reflections on mortality are poignantly captured in this memoir. The series Fellow Travelers—based on Thomas Mallon’s novel—served as a powerful catalyst, unlocking a flood of Bruso’s own memories and drawing striking parallels between the lives of its characters and his own experiences.
So Far Away No One Will Notice is not only a testament to Bruso’s personal resilience but also a broader narrative of the enduring challenges and triumphs within the LGBTQ+ community. From his early sexual awakening and experiences to the heartbreaking murder and funeral of his first serious partner, Bruso’s memoir weaves together dramatic episodes of Fellow Travelers with deeply personal chapters of his life.
Arthur Bruso received his MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and has exhibited his art at the Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, the New Jersey State Museum Trenton, and LaMamma LaGalleria in New York, among others. As co-director of Curious Matter, a not-for-profit project and exhibition space, Bruso continues to be a vital presence in the arts community. He has authored five photography monographs and numerous essays on art.
Bentboiz Press is committed to providing a platform for diverse narratives within the LGBTQ+ community, aiming to surprise, challenge, and inspire. The Bentboiz Press mission is to shed light on the enduring challenges and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community through powerful storytelling that bridges past and present.
“This memoir has been a difficult process. When I started, I imagined an essay that would articulate, and help clarify the daunting emotional turmoil brought on by what would or should have been considered a positive announcement of ‘undetectable,’ in the face of my cancer diagnosis. But what I was after was to have it gone. The sense of limbo I experienced brought forth a cascade of questioning every decision of my life. Soon an essay became a book length memoir. I’m humbled and honored to share what I hope will in some way serve others faced with similar questions.” said Bruso.
